On Friday, January 10, 2020, I decided to travel to my hometown of Sibley, Louisiana, blind to the fact of what was about to happen later that night. After visiting with my Mom and playing with my nieces and nephews, I decided to go to bed at 10 pm. I was aware of the storm approaching the area; although, I was oblivious to the fact of what would wake me. Along with extreme lightning and thunder, there was also a substantial amount of rain. My sister was watching the weather forecast when suddenly I overheard the Meteorologist, informing those in the path of the tornado to take cover immediately. This event seemed so surreal, and I had only dreamed of it happening. Never did I expect it to happen to my family or me in real life. I remember as a kid watching the movie twister; although I knew it was fictional, this was no drill we were facing. Like a scene from the movie Twister, I envisioned the storm crossing over our home and pulling us out of it. My heart started to race as we could hear the emergency sirens blasting through the sound of the storm. The terrifying part of it all was you had no idea of the path the tornado was traveling. I placed my sister and the kids in the closets and secured them by placing pillows over them. Fortunately, this night, we were spared by the F2 tornado missing our area of the town. This night was the most terrifying 5 minutes of my life, as we had no idea what was about to happen. Unfortunately, the storm claimed three lives in another town. It is beyond unbelievable to witness the power of nature and how it uprooted massive trees and snapped others like toothpicks. I can sincerely say-cherish every moment you and your loved ones have on this Earth.
